I think I learned about Hear No Evil, a historical fiction set in Scotland, from @graeme_c — I ordered a copy from Blackwell’s last year but just now got around to reading it. It’s the fictionalized story of Jean Campbell, a deaf woman who was put on trial for infanticide in early 19th century Scotland. Sarah Smith gives voice to this character of whom so little is actually known. It was interesting to read about the ways in which deaf people were perceived at that time in Edinburgh and Glasgow and the emergence of formal sign language. I do wish more of the book was written from Jean’s perspective and less from the man who was assigned as her court translator, but I enjoyed reading a setting and situation that I wouldn’t normally encounter in my historical fiction reading.
