I read His Dark Materials trilogy back in 2002, and have owned this beautiful little edition of a story from that world since 2003. That’s 21 years that this book has sat on my shelf, unread. Until now! Ephemera in books are like literary catnip, and this tiny book is full of them. For example: There’s a fold-out insert halfway through that includes a map of that world’s Oxford, and vintage style advertisements for travel items, there’s an excerpt from a book referenced in the story, and a postcard written by one of the characters in the main books. I’d forgotten how much I enjoyed Pullman’s writing and world-building, and now I’m interested to read his Book of Dust trilogy (the third book should be published within the year).
