Reality Blurred

I have loved Jane Eyre ever since I read it as a preteen (pictured here is the edition I owned) but it wasn’t until I was recently scrounging through the YA offerings at a book sale event that I discovered “It All Began With Jane Eyre” by Sheila Greenwald. I could relate to Franny’s obsession with books, and found it amusing that when her mother gave her more contemporary YA books to read instead, she starts imagining the issues contained therein (adultery, teen pregnancy, etc.) all around her, with results akin to a comedy of errors. I could see my younger self in Franny’s issues with food and body image/esteem, and her penchant for journaling. I think if I’d read this back when I was the target audience, I definitely would have been entertained.
