Rainy day weekends

It rained pretty much the entire weekend, which was a good thing, firstly because it’s been insufferably humid and hot lately, and the rain cooled things off a bit and helped bring back some of the green to our lawn’s brown spots – yes, it’s only June and already our grass is drying out. Secondly, and arguably more importantly, a rainy day gives me a valid excuse to sit inside and cozy up in our comfy chair with a hot cup of tea and just read the day away.

I needed that time, too, since I’m only a couple of days away from this month’s bookclub meetup, and as of Saturday, I hadn’t started the book, Atonement, which was my selection for this month. Luckily, once I started it, I could hardly put it down, and finished it just before midnight last night. What a fabulous book! In lesser hands, this could have been maudlin or trite, but in McEwan’s exquisite, simple language, I thought it was a powerful story that dealt with the nature of truth, and the ways in which we can deceive ourselves and others. I can’t wait to hear what my other bookclubbers thought of it, and hope it provokes a good discussion.
