This was a timely read. Favourite quote: “The opinion that art should have nothing to do with politics is itself a political attitude.” George Orwell’s Why I Write was a bit of a mixed bag of essays, both figuratively and literally. Some were definitely “of their time” and others could have been written yesterday. Some were very focused on socialism and the ills of capitalism, in others he talks about the degradation of the written word and the motivations of writers. I’m glad I read it just to get some insight into Orwell’s mind, but I wouldn’t say any of the essays will have a lasting impact on me.
