I spent the first evening of fall finishing Waking the Moon, which is another book I’ve had in my collection for over a decade, waiting to be read. It’s one of the early “dark academia” novels, published just two years after Donna Tartt’s The Secret History, and deserves to have been more widely read than it has. Secret societies, goddess cults, archaeological finds, murder and sacrificial offerings, Waking the Moon has it all. It’s also very evocative of time and place and you can tell the author did an enormous amount of research. If I had read this back in the 90s when I was at university, I’d have been getting everyone I knew to read it. If I’d read it back in the early 2000s, I’d have gotten all my neopagan friends to read it. Reading it now, I wish all these dark academia readers would pick it up so it would finally get the attention it deserves.
