Company of Liars by Karen Maitland was a recent addition to my shelves but I was without an ebook to read and a copy was available to borrow. (I tend to borrow books I already own, in that vain attempt to whittle down my TBR.) Taking place at the onset of the outbreak of plague in England in 1348, the story is narrated by Camelot, a seller of so-called Christian relics. He finds himself among a group of mismatched people trying to outpace the plague by traveling north. Each of the other characters is hiding something, and mistrust abounds even as they are dependent on one another for their survival. In their midst is a mysterious young girl, Nairgorm, who is a reader of runes, and who directs them along their journey according to what she divines. Company of Liars has historical detail, magic, folklore, and horror wrapped in a package that calls to mind nights by a fire long ago when stories were told and shared. I’ll definitely be reading more of Maitland’s novels.
