Tweenage Nostalgia

This edition of Lois Duncan’s Summer of Fear was one of my core tween reading experiences, having gotten the book from my teenaged aunt’s bookshelf. I decided to use this as the “rereading” selection for my 2025 book bingo challenge and that now would be the perfect time to read it. I was curious as to how much of the story I’d remember with 40+ years in between readings. Surprisingly—or not—that aura of familiarity rested over the entire book, and “oh right, this part” was a frequent thought while reading. It largely stands up to the test of time, aside of course from the fact that the events of the book (a family’s niece comes to live with them after the sudden deaths of her parents, and proceeds to wreak havoc—but is she who she says she is?) had to occur in a pre-Internet era. I think I’ll reread Stranger With My Face, another Duncan childhood favourite of mine.
