I’m not sure how I feel about Kaveh Akbar’s novel, Martyr! — in some respects I loved it. The writing is excellent and I appreciated the different points-of-view and ways in which the story was told. I had also never heard of Flight 655, the Iranian flight blown up by an American missile, killing all 290 people on board. Learning of that in itself is enough for me to be glad I read it. But a lot went unsaid, unexplored. And I think the Coda was superfluous and detracted from the ending of the story. This is one of those books I’d love to discuss and hash out with other readers
