Writing on Walking

I knew I would like In Praise of Paths when it began by mentioning Mistaken Point in Newfoundland. Torbjørn Ekelund writes about all sorts of paths, from those established by ancient nomads to hiking trails, to the paved walkways of urban planners. When he writes about the paths of his childhood, I reminisced about my own, the one that led into the woods behind our house. When he spoke about Grandma Gatewood and her historic trek of the Appalachian Trail, I thought of my own hikes along that venerable path. And today, I took it along with me on a walk on the dirt-packed path along the Brandywine Creek, which was flowing quite nicely after last night’s rainstorm. A fine addition to the canon of writing about walking.
