En route from Roanoke to Richmond which meant passing through Charlottesville, which meant of course, stopping by two of this historic university town’s bookstores. First was @new_dominion_bookshop – Virginia’s oldest bookshop, where I picked up a couple of beautiful books, including one on the wonders of the natural world at night, and a collection of stories by Wendell Berry—I’ve read and love his poetry but not yet his fiction. Then it was a visit to Heartwood Books, one of those lovely used bookstores where things are in a general order but not so much so that it deters from the browsing discoveries. I found a copy of a Denis Johnson book I’ve been wanting, and also a first edition Norah Lofts novel—when I was checking out, the bookseller told me the cover artist, Warren Chappell, lived in the area until his death. I also picked up a couple of books I didn’t know I wanted until I saw them.
