Refuge and Resistance

In Syria in 2016, a group of young men built an underground library in their city, salvaging books from the rubble and creating a respite from the daily bombings, starvation, and despair of a city under siege. The Book Collectors is a reminder of the privilege those of us in peaceful, safe societies have—whether it’s to travel around our city without bombs falling from the sky, to live free from the fear that a regime wants to destroy us, or simply to read what we choose. It’s a reminder that this world has a long history of people suffering at the hands of those in power, which continues to this day.
