E for Effort

I can’t imagine trying to capture the atmosphere of dread and malevolence that Shirley Jackson perfected in her classic book. A Haunting on the Hill smartly doesn’t try to replicate that understated sense of foreboding; it’s an homage hut smartly doesn’t attempt to replicate Jackson’s tone of understated malice—it’s very much in-your-face. My main complaint is that the story was 95% buildup and the climax and denouement was over too quickly.
