I’m just sixty pages into Young Mungo, and along with a growing sense of dread, I have a growing list of Scottish words I have been looking up the meanings to as I read, including so far: bothy, gallus, stour, scunner, smirr, oxters, boak, sleekit, besom, jakey, and fitba. I love it. (And I thought Newfoundland had an extensive dialect.) To be clear: this isn’t a criticism, and readers can get a sense of the word meaning from context; I just am a nerd who likes words.
