Library life

Recently, an email from one of the library listservs I belong to suggested a book called Free for All by Don Borchert, which gives an insider’s look at the daily life and goings-on in a public library. I checked our catalog to see if we had a copy, and was pleasantly surprised to see that we did. I read it over the course of a couple days, recognizing some of our own patrons and situations in its pages. There were of course, some aspects of Borchert’s job to which I (thankfully) could not relate, like rival gangs congregating in the library, and I was in respectful awe of his staffing to patron ratios (and I thought our library was understaffed), but from the quirky, to the rude, to the ones who make working in a public service role worthwhile, this book shows that library users are the same, whether you’re on the East Coast or the West Coast, whether you’re a rural library or an urban one. A light, fun read that will appeal to library workers and fans alike.
