I loved Anne Fadiman’s book about reading, Ex Libris, (I still use the terms courtly and carnal to describe the two types of book lovers) and her collection of essays, At Large and At Small. Rereadings is the final book in this set, but instead of being written by her, it’s a collection of essays written by writers about a favourite book of theirs that they reread many years later. As I’m planning to set myself a 2026 goal of rereading (which I never do) I thought this was a timely read. Unfortunately I wasn’t the biggest fan; most of the writers were unfamiliar to me, and with the exception of a couple books, I’d not read the ones they discussed and reading about them didn’t pique my interest.
