Murder and Mayhem

Dark Fire is the second book in the Matthew Shardlake series, set in Tudor-era England. This installment takes place in London, on the cusp of Cromwell’s downfall. Shardlake has to solve not one, but two mysteries, in the span of a fortnight. I confess that I didn’t enjoy this book as much as the first one; perhaps I would have liked it more if his attention hadn’t been split between searching for the source of the famed Greek Fire, and attempting to prove the innocence of a girl charged with murder. I’m not much of a mystery reader — it’s the historical aspect that really interests me — but I will probably go on to read at least one more in the series and see how I like it.
