Raise Your Hackles

Grey Dog is a book I bought from Kings Co-op Bookstore while visiting Trident Booksellers in Halifax the summer before last. This is a delicious slow burn of a horror novel, literary and also legitimately frightening, as the main character, Ada, seems to slowly descend into madness. At the outset, after being sent in disgrace to an isolated Canadian village to be the schoolteacher, I was reminded a bit of Laura Ingalls and Anne Shirley in their teaching years—if Laura and Ann found solace in the study of natural science and harboured secret desires for the minister’s wife. This is folk horror with a queer, feminist twist.
