Sleepaway is a collection of essays and stories that are set at summer camps, of all sorts. Reading them brought back memories of my own experience at Tangier Deanery Camp (now @deaneryproject) in the late 1980s on the eastern shore of Nova Scotia. Pictured are the dock and swimming area (the camp was located in a cove), one showing the typical bunkhouse in the background, and another with the bunkhouse’s interior — basically plywood and lumber scrawled-upon bunks and walls, definitely nothing fancy! But I love that I got to have the summer camp experience, and reading Sleepaway brings all of that back: the freedom, the wildness, the friendships and cliques, the pairing up and the falling out, the undertone of danger, the routines and the campfire singalongs—all of that and so much more, in a time without computers or phones.
