The Peepshow is the latest book from Kate Summerscale, delving into the crimes that took place at 10 Rillington Place in the mid-20th century by serial killer Reg Christie. I like how Summerscale contextualizes the crimes she writes about within the larger sociological climate of the period. One thing my reading of the book did prompt was for me to find a copy of A Pin to See the Peepshow, a novelization of another famous 20th century British crime, written by F. Tennyson Jesse. Fryn, as she’s called, was one of the contemporary writers of the Christie case and does not come off favorably in Summerscale’s portrayal (although no one really does). I would have liked more information about the victims themselves, but we’re only offered the most cursory of details. I also would have liked to have seen photos of the people and places involved in the case, but I was able to turn to the Internet for much of that.
