There has been so much hype surrounding Wild Dark Shore, and I really liked her earlier novel, Migrations (also featuring a woman in the midst of personal strife while navigating a world irrevocably changed by climate crisis) so I had high hopes when I finally read it. And I know I’m in the minority here. But meh. Many of the negative reviews on Goodreads articulate my issues much better than I will, whether it’s to do with the lack of/mis- communication among the characters, the preternaturally articulate child, the heavy handed message that a woman’s role is sacrifice, etc. etc. I was not a fan of this book, except for the descriptions of the animals, and learning in the afterword that the island setting is based on Macquarie Island, a subantarctic island, which has a fascinating story itself.
