Another instance of a gorgeous cover, an interesting premise, but a lackluster read. In the near future, the melting of the ice caps has drowned cities, including NYC, and super-storms wreak havoc. I wonder why the author chose certain elements, some minor – like why the parents are formally called Mother and Father, yet the children are given nicknames (Nonie and Bix instead of Norah and Beatrice); and others billed as major plot points (Nonie being able to sense oncoming storms with no explanation) yet they really wouldn’t make that much of a difference if they weren’t part of the story. And then there’s the matter of this community of people refusing to assist others, even going so far as to dehumanize those without shelter with a collective moniker, “the Lost,” but yet when they themselves become unmoored, the people who refuse them sanctuary are portrayed as evil. (And I’m not saying those people aren’t, but there is a lack of introspection towards their own actions.) Worst of all, I just didn’t feel much of an emotional connection to any of the characters in what is supposed to be a character-driven novel.
