I bought The Luminous Sea on my last trip to Newfoundland, and here I am finally reading it more than two years later. (Which really isn’t that long for books that end up on my shelf.) It’s set in an outport on the east coast of the island, when a marine biology research assistant catches something quite unusual in the bay. I loved recognizing the general area where the book is set, with its references to Butterpot Park, Brigus, and Carbonear, for example. (One of my aunts lives in the same town as the author, even.) The story itself is magic, and what occurs both infuriated me and left me believing in possibilities in the mysteries of the deep.
