Set in the Puritan colonies of New England in the latter part of the 17th century, this is the story of two men, one a minister, the other a doctor, and their secret love for one another, which turns out to be not so secret, especially to their families. It’s not a romantic, idealized portrayal, and one that made me think. I especially liked the author’s afterword, where he discusses the limited access to, and sources of, LGBTQ history, particularly relationships, prior to recent times.
