Victorian Psycho is a book I’ve had on my list to read for months, awaiting its publication. I finally got my hands on a copy and it is one that delivers on the promise of its title. Our main character, Winifred Notty, a governess, is narrating the story, so we get inside her mind, or at least as much as she is aware of and willing to share. It’s both a disturbing and sometimes sardonically entertaining place to be. Reality is often blurred, or turned on its head. As if Ann Radcliffe and Quentin Tarantino had a literary love child, the story becomes cartoonish in its extremes, and so the terror is tempered by that. I think it would make for a scary fun—and very bloody—movie, which of course is already in the works.
