I really enjoyed Lucy Mangan’s memoir of her childhood reading, mainly because we are pretty much the same age and were of similar temperaments as children. We didn’t share a lot of the same books, though. Among my favorites (some pictured here with hers—and isn’t that a beautiful cover?) would be The Ghost of Opalina, Island of the Blue Dolphins, the Adrian Mole series, After the First Death, Lois Duncan’s books, Choose Your Own Adventure books, Trixie Belden and Nancy Drew, and of course, the Little Golden Books, especially The Monster at the End of This Book and A Child’s Garden of Verses. We do share a love for Judy Blume, along with every other GenX girl reader I’ve ever met, but one of my favorites of Blume’s, Otherwise Known as Sheila the Great, didn’t get a mention. But regardless, Bookworm was an entertaining, nostalgic read.
