“The truth about stories is that that’s all we are.” This collection of essays, part of the CBC Massey Lectures series and originally broadcast in 2003 on CBC Radio (you can google and access the archives to listen to them). King shares stories told by and about Indigenous people, explores the perception of “the Indian” in our society and culture, and how racism and colonialism persist. Twenty years after publication, it’s all still sadly pertinent today. And now that I’ve been told, King reminds his reader/listener at the end of each story, “I can’t say in the years to come that I would have lived my life differently if only I had heard this story. I’ve heard it now.”
