One of my favorite things to do when the temperature warms up enough is to sit on our back porch and read something appropriate to the season in the mornings with my coffee. It’s a quiet way to start the day, and my latest book is Spring Rain, a collection of vignettes by Marc Hamer. The chapters alternate between “Rain” which are written from the perspective of Hamer as a young boy, and “Gardener” which are his observations as an older man. The writing as a boy is filled with wonder, curiosity, and fear/anger, while his adult self is contemplative, content, and has a sense of /acceptance/zen. While grounded fully in the earth and the present, Spring Rain may be some of the most wise, spiritual writing I’ve encountered.
