When Tyranny Takes Hold

Prophet Song, winner of this year’s Booker Prize, was a somewhat challenging read, as it had no punctuation for speech and very few paragraph breaks. For me, that style made for a more intense, immersive reading experience. I don’t think anyone could read this book and not think of the suffering of ordinary people in Gaza, Ukraine, Syria, Haiti, Afghanistan, and the countless other instances of oppression and violence throughout history; and how quickly what we perceive as immutable can change.
