The Book of Lost Things was one of my favorite reads of last year, and I was fortunate enough to attend an author event to promote the sequel, The Land of Lost Things, at @charmcitybooks in Baltimore, within a couple of days of reading the first books. (Side note: I had no idea he’s also a prolific writer of esteemed crime novels as well as other books.) It’s a worthy follow up to the first novel, and while the first book was written from a child’s perspective (and a boy), the second is through the eyes of an adult woman (and mother). I highlighted so many great lines and passages; some were cleverly funny, like “Used booksellers’ ploys were legion: BACK IN FIVE MINUTES signs that remained in place for hours, or days” and others were about the significance of stories, like “We’re not creatures of flesh and blood alone, no more than a book is just ink, paper, and card. We’re beings of tale and fable. We exist as narratives.”
