My final completed book of 2023: the first in Pat Barker’s WWI trilogy, Regeneration. I’ve not read a lot of fiction set in the First World War, and this is the first one I can recall reading set in a psychiatric war hospital, where soldiers experiencing various forms of PTSD, or shell shock, as it was then known. The story features both real and fictional characters, and is told in a pragmatic style, even when describing horrific scenes. I have the next two book on my shelf, and plan to read them in 2024.
