I think @michael.palin is correct when he says that the Franklin expedition is in the collective imagination of many Canadians. It is for me, at least. I grew up learning about the quest for the famed Northwest Passage in school. Stan Rogers’ songs were part of my childhood and young adulthood as well. Searches for long lost ships and the doomed men who manned them were part of our folklore. Erebus is both informative and engrossing and I highly recommend it for anyone interested in polar exploration or seafaring history. This was my last “winter read,” a fitting end to the season.
