Life in a Northern Town

I first heard about Kestrel for a Knave by Barry Hines from reading Mark Hodkinson’s memoir “No one Round Here Reads Tolstoy.” I tracked down a copy through inter-library loan, and one of my local libraries had the film adaptation and a memoir from Barry’s older brother, Richard. Richard’s experience is similar in many ways to Billy’s, the main character in the novel. All offer great insight into the working class of northern England. I’m really glad I tracked these down.
