I’ve finally, after years of having this book on my shelf, read John Banville’s The Sea. One reviewer on Goodreads made the comment that this book is a example of the difference between literature and fiction, and I think that’s apt. The Sea isn’t character or plot driven; the writing is beautiful but not saccharine.
