After determining yesterday that I was not going to waste my time continuing with Pillars of the Earth (superfluous, obviously male gaze sex and violence), I chose this debut novel by @britrbennett off my shelf. I bought both of her books last year, and wanted to read her first novel first. I basically only put it down to sleep. It’s a complex story of motherhood in various guises, and questions how our relationships with our mothers and our pasts influence us, the things that haunt and shape us. I loved it.
