Creative journaling

I had a great summer of reading, although I came up one book short on Maggie’s Southern Reading Challenge, and still need to get caught up on a few reviews. One that I almost forgot to write about was a great little gem of a book called How to Make a Journal of Your Life by Daniel Price. I found this while doing some shelving in the 800s earlier in the summer and its offbeat cover art appealed to me. Now while I enjoy the idea of journaling, and indeed have a few books on the subject, I am not so good on the actual process of keeping a journal. My perfectionist nature gets in the way – along with my inner critic, who generally won’t shut up long enough for me to write, so my journaling is sporadic at best.

Price, an artist and photographer, suggests spicing up our journals with drawings, pressed flowers and other miscellanea. Getting more creative with my journal, so that it’s not just page after page of writing, is something that frankly I never considered before, but I like it.

Throughout the book, Price’s advice is to relax, have a cookie, and enjoy ourselves. Granted, this is not new (well, maybe the cookie part, which is sage advice indeed), but it’s the easygoing, playful attitude conveyed throughout this compact little book which makes it so special and appealed to me so much.
