I love to travel. I’ve lived in a lot of different places, and have visited even more. I haven’t done as much traveling in recent years as I would have liked, and so usually resort to living vicariously through other adventurous souls via travel essay books.
Sand in My Bra and Other Misadventures is a collection of stories written by women accounting their travels around the globe. The stories are quite short, some only a couple pages in length, and most weren’t that interesting. A disproportionate number dealt with bodily functions. I found that in most stories, the women talked more about themselves, ruminating on such topics as what clothes to pack rather than on the far-flung places they were visiting. My favorite stories were one woman’s experience at the annual Burning Man festival and another’s retelling of a rafting trip down the Colorado River.
Overall, the stories were cutesy, not overly funny (even though they were meant to be) and mostly forgettable. Probably not a series I’d pursue further.
